Being an undercover street-economist, I heard about a 911 call reporting that Morality was ‘missing’, presumed dead. My mentor, Profit, was implicated. I had 24 hours to gather evidence exonerating Profit before its trial. Morality is the code of values guiding one’s actions. We’re 95% genetically identical to chimpanzees, so morality sets humanity apart. Some argue that morality loses importance in dog-eat-dog impoverished nations. Contrariwise, it gains importance. Using soccer as an analogy, profit is the striker and morality the defender, but on the same team.

Profit’s co-accused, Greed, had a long criminal record. Greed means our unlimited wants. Morality regulates Greed. If Morality builds 7-foot walls, Greed forges 8-foot ladders. Greed is a caveman hangover driving self-preservation; profit drives evolution through innovation. Profit is mutually-beneficial greed.

So where was the crimescene located? Recession left a global crimescene. A typical example of globalisation is America loaning to German corporates who invested in US companies that closed because Japanese investors moved investments to India. This multicultural rainbow camouflages multinationals who blackmail the Third-World’s blueprints, redtape its greenlights and whitewash the evidence. We don’t need new economic systems, just new eyes.

However, fingerprints on the Recession crimescene implicated Recklessness, not Greed. If morals were diseases, reckless speculators would be the healthiest people alive. I’ve been homeless, I know what it’s like to use a brick as your pillow. But I still maintain that greed is good. On our list of things to worry about, greed is last, behind, “Are we as a people consuming too many donuts?”
